When Jurassic World Meets VBS in Puerto Rico

My church, First Baptist Church of Gibsonville, NC, lived an amazing adventure this week when we flew to Puerto Rico and joined with other churches to serve God in the San Juan area. My group paired with a church from Indiana and helped with a VBS at a church, as well as completed manual labor projects around the church. We had an amazing experience!

Driving up the first day, little heads peeked out of the windows of the first trailer, looking for the “missionarios”. We walked in and were greeted with the sweetest faces all smiling shyly. We played a lot of games, mainly simple ones like kickball and tag, and really got to know the children.

While at the church we saw some of God’s beautiful animals. Three ginormous iguanas walked around on the roof of a neighbor’s house; a horse walked around the same neighbor’s pool. Two yellow and blue parrots ate from the top of a mango tree, and everywhere we looked we saw lizards of all shapes and sizes!

Every single day I saw God in the faces of the children and the volunteers. These children were so well behaved that we didn’t have to discipline one even once! Instead, they were full of joy. Most of the kids spoke both English and Spanish, and for those who didn’t, some of the older kids and Danny, our ministry contact, translated for us.

I am so grateful for each and every one of those kids. I pray they are led on the right path to have Jesus in their hearts. I am filled with joy. I am so glad God led me to this mission trip; it’s one I’ll never forget.
