Camp Caribe Blog May 25, 2016

We have had a HOT, HUMID, HARD-WORKING week here at Camp Caribe.  I have been so proud of our kids – all just finished with their sophomore year of high school.  They have worked so hard – volunteering quickly for the most difficult jobs.  I have not heard a single complaint; they are supportive of each other – looking out for each other and having a lot of fun.  The camp is right next to the ocean, so they jump into the ocean during our evening break.  Amazing!

This mission trip is different from previous trips I’ve been on, because we have not been out in the community.  We are helping the Camp Caribe staff prepare for the Uni-Challenge.  So we are looking forward to meeting the 12 teams of 12 that come to compete in the obstacle courses, etc. on Saturday.

I’ll give you an example of some of our tasks:

  • Alek, J.P., Mavrick, and Alek dug trenches and moved 40 tires into them for a part of one of the obstacle courses.

  • Josh used some of his eagle scout skills to tie knots in the ropes that are attached to tractor tires that competitors will pull across a 50 foot lane in the strong man event.

  • Abby, Rachel, Annie, and Kira pounded bent screws partially out of a pile of scrap wood and pulled them the rest of the way with crowbars.  Nothing is ever wasted here.

  • Greg worked with Anthony, one of the Puerto Rican teens to pound posts into the ground around a run of balance beams (12) that we built.  Then they ran string back and forth between the posts.  The competitors will have to crouch under the string as they race along the balance beams.

Tomorrow is our “off day”.  We will head to a beach, an area where we can jump off cliffs, and a plaza where we can do a bit of souvenir shopping.  The teens will perform a skit in the plaza and hand out Spanish Bibles to any interested people.

As always, God is good, and it is so good to have an opportunity to step away and seek Him!
